Collaborating, European researchers from Italy, Germany, Switzerland and the U.K. have developed a futuristic automated parking system. Instead of building a robot, like the one used at Dusseldorf Airport, they designed a system that lets an electronic car park by itself, after it gets triggered by a mobile app.
Imagine yourself, about to park your car, in a huge parking garage but you don't feel like searching for a spot, finding your way out or waiting in line. Instead of going through the hassle parking sometimes can become, you exit your car, take out your smartphone and with one press of a button you just instructed your car to go and find an empty parking spot and neatly park the car and turn it off.
All this sounds like some futuristic ideal, but is closer than you think. E-cars can even find their way to an EV-charging system and plug-in while you're already on your way to your destination.
Of course it's a long way to go before this technology spreads everywhere, but in Europe, Neelie Kroes (VP of the European Commission/European commissioner for Digital Agenda) already decided for the new technology.
The project is about to be concluded around 2015, in the years following the idea is going to be commercialised, even for on-street parking eventually.
If google hurries with their self-driving cars, a combination of the two would bring the future closer than most of us ever imagined.
