Flinders University is a leading Australian University catering for over 30,000 students and staff. Holman Engineering has implemented Nedap’s smart parking sensor system in order to provide highly accurate parking guidance for students and staff on the large Bedford Park campus.
Growing Number of Students at Flinders University
Flinders University is ranked among the nation’s top 10 universities. As a renowned university, it attracts a growing number of students, resulting in more traffic movement to the University campus. There are 22 car parks distributed throughout the Bedford Park campus, both outdoor and multi-level.
Guiding Motorists to Available Parking Bays
To facilitate the growing number of students and staff accessing the campus by car, a parking guidance system was required to indicate to motorists coming to the campus where to find an available parking bay. The system was implemented to reduce traffic on the campus searching for a parking space.
Holman Engineering is specialized in parking guidance. Holman, Nedap’s local partner in Australia, was selected to design and implement the parking guidance system to aid students and staff in efficiently finding available parking spaces on the large campus. The Holman parking guidance system monitors vehicle movements, as well as reserved bays, to accurately calculate the available spaces. The system then displays these figures on custom signs installed throughout the campus.
Detecting Occupancy of Individual Parking Bays
The parking guidance system is based on count points and individually bay mounted Nedap SENSIT Surface Mount sensors. The Nedap SENSIT IR Surface Mount sensors were selected to detect occupancy of individual outdoor parking bays. A sensor is installed in each parking bay to provide real-time occupancy of outdoor parking bays. The sensor is featured with wireless communication and dual detection technology, which ensures highly accurate detection. Outdoor parking bays and to provide highly accurate parking guidance to the motorist to available parking outdoor bays.
A Wireless Technology Solution
The count points, Nedap SENSIT sensors and LED displays all use wireless technology to communicate with Holman’s TrafficNet server. The server stores all collected data on a central database which can be accessed by a user-friendly web-based UI. The system is integrated with the CellOPark’s parking payment app and can easily communicate data with other 3rd party web-based services.
