Q-Park Frontenpark Has Been Significantly Expanded

Transformation Into A Mobility Hub And Largest Parking Location In Maastricht

- Maastricht, NL
Q-Park Frontenpark Car Park Building

In a seven-month renovation, Q-Park Frontenpark was not only transformed into a Mobility Hub, but also expanded with a three-level parking garage. The capacity has therefore increased by 596 parking spaces to 1,308 in total; making it the largest parking location in Maastricht. On June 25, Alderman John Aarts festively reopened the location.

“As the city's mobility partner, we were happy to take on this project in our home city of Maastricht,” explains Maxime Vissers, Acquisition Manager at Q-Park Netherlands. Q-Park Frontenpark is strategically located at the end of the Noorderbrug, on the edge of the city. At the request of the municipality, via Belvédère WOM, the capacity has been significantly increased to cope with the parking pressure. For the completion of the final phase of the Sphinxkwartier, the car park of the same name, which is located opposite Q-Park Frontenpark, will be closed in the future. “We like to think about the accessibility of the city and are proud that we are playing a role in this with the expansion of our location. With the ambition to become a transshipment point for goods, we also expect to contribute to the zero-emission zone (ZES) and the selective accessibility of the city center."

There are also shared bicycles from Arriva and MOBIAN and six charging stations have been installed. “This has made Frontenpark a full-fledged Mobility Hub,” continues Vissers. “You can easily park your car there and charge it if necessary. You can walk to the center or the lively Radiumplein and Sphinxkwartier in a few minutes. Or you can simply switch to a bicycle or public transport and cover the last kilometers to your final destination.”

As usual at Q-Park, sustainability was an important starting point for this project. For example, 400 solar panels and a 60 kW battery have been installed, meaning that the parking garage can in principle fully provide its own energy supply for lighting, ventilation, equipment and the six charging stations. Vissers: “We would like to install more charging stations, but there is currently no capacity on the power grid for this. As soon as possible, we will further expand the charging options.”

The expansion of the location was designed by architectural firm MH1. The design has been drawn up with great respect for the surrounding flora and fauna. By using Polyned cladding, a chic appearance has been chosen, in keeping with the environment and 'Quality in parking'.

After a European tender procedure supervised by engineering firm Witteveen+Bos, Continental Car Parks won the contract to realize the expansion. This is modular because this is a temporary solution. Over the next seven years, an underground parking garage with housing above it is planned to be built on the Sphinx site opposite.

The parking rate is 1.50 euros per 32 minutes and a maximum of 16 euros per day, more favorable than the rates in the center. Naturally, parking spaces can be reserved in advance online. “We also offer digital parking solutions for visiting purposes in the area. This way, their guests and visitors can park cheaply at this location and they are always assured of a spot."
