Dutch city Zoetermeer first with smart parking system of the future
Motorists soon will be quickly directed to a free parking space in the city center of Zoetermeer. The collaboration of Nedap and Vialis enables this innovative Smart Parking concept. Real-time information on the availability of parking spaces is shown on electronic displays alongside the access roads to the city center.
The municipality of Zoetermeer is the first municipality in the Netherlands that responds to the desire of the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment to make parking data publicly available. Finding free parking spaces quickly reduces emissions and make city centers more attractive to visitors. Parking data will be made available through an app for smart phones and through navigation systems in vehicles.
By placing the last parking sensor on the Pilatusdam, alderman Haring officially put the innovative parking system to work. Wireless sensors provide real-time information about the number of free and occupied parking spaces in the city center of Zoetermeer on the Pilatusdam, Tempel, Delftsewallen, CKC and Osijlaan. The system is scheduled to be fully operable mid October. It will provide its data to the already implemented intelligent traffic management system of Zoetermeer.
Nedap is developer and the manufacturer of the SENSIT platform, a network of wireless parking sensors which detect vehicle occupancy at every single parking space. The system collects parking data and shares that information with third party parking guidance, enforcement and intelligent traffic management systems. Nedap currently works with partners and cities worldwide to implement the SENSIT system.
Research and experience have proven the system’s positive impact on traffic flow and city center attractiveness to visitors. It is likely that visitors will be able to navigate through Zoetermeer easier and that already existing parking facilities will be better utilized.
