Nedap's Insights into Connectivity and IoT

Over the past week, we have taken a look at connectivity and IoT in the parking industry. During our weekly Parking News, we heard from Edwin Siemerink, the Proposition Manager of SENSIT from Nedap. Here are more of his thoughts on the topic:

How Can Connectivity Ease Parking Pain?

Edwin: "Connectivity is becoming increasingly important for people and businesses, and, as more and more mobility data is available, the trick will be translating this big data so that it can be used by us in our daily lives. If this data could be used by you and me it would make, for instance, the daily struggle of traveling more effective and finding a parking spot closer to your destination would become much easier."

As IoT Becomes More Commonplace, How Do You Envisage Connectivity Working On A Larger Scale?

Edwin: "The Internet of Things is increasingly present in our lives, with more and more sensors being placed in our homes, cities, and all kinds of applications. Most of these smart sensors are connected and forwarding data to a centralized server.

"IoT connectivity is pushed by the telecom operators, using both their current network topologies and through the rollout of new IoT networks, such as 5G developments. As IoT becomes more prevalent, it will become more attractive and far easier to use it to detect parking occupancy in real time.

"This is exactly where Nedap sees our parking sensors proposition, SENSIT, becoming involved. By making parking occupancy data, accurate, reliable, and in real-time, it can be integrated into a broad variety of applications that can be used by you and me, and also by smart mobility projects."

What New Projects Does Nedap Have In The Pipeline?

Edwin: "The list of potential projects for parking sensors is growing strongly as the awareness and desire for real-time and reliable smart parking data increases. For our proven technologies SENSIT proposition we have a lot of potential projects in parking guidance, parking enforcement, retail, and logistics services.

"And, for the new Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) sensors we have recently launched, we have several proofs of concepts in Europe and the Middle East. These proof of concepts have proven their value already in project installations in both Germany and Italy, in the rollout of larger quantities in city projects for parking guidance such as in Hamburg and Bonn, and for bus parking in Rome, Italy."
