Nedap expands smart parking in entire city center of Kortrijk

After being introduced successfully last year, Kortrijk now has decided to roll out short-stay parking zones in the entire city center. The combination Flow / Nedap is selected to make this happen, which is a conclusion after an industry tender. Real-time parking data will be used to monitor the usage of on-street parking bays. To guide traffic effectively, to improve the utilization of the existing parking capacity, as well as to manage parking enforcement more efficiently.

Parko is responsible for the full on- and off-street parking infrastructure in Kortrijk. This organization introduced the smart Shop & Go parking spaces in its city center early 2013. The Doorniksestraat and at the Grote Markt have been the first to get these intelligent parking bays. Within a few weeks the short-stay parking zones will be introduced in the entire city center. In the first phase 235 parking bays will be equipped with a wireless parking sensor. In total 500 parking spaces are involved in the roll out of the short-stay smart parking solution in 2014. 

The Shop & Go zones, equipped with Nedap’s wireless parking sensor system SENSIT, offer these drivers 30 minutes of parking free of charge. The spaces are specifically developed for visitors who need to run a quick errand or suppliers who are delivering packages. This results in less congestion, safer streets and a more attractive city for visitors and retailers.

The Shop & Go parking bays in Kortrijk are monitored closely by parking attendants to prevent abuse of the short stay spaces. Whenever a sensor detects that a vehicle has been parked for over half an hour, the parking attendant receives a message that informs about the parking bay number with the vehicle in overstay.

Last month, the technology federation Agoria and the Belfius bank decided to award Kortrijk as “Smart City” for this forward thinking parking solution.

After an industry tender the combination Flow and Nedap is selected to roll out the intelligent short-stay parking spaces over the entire city center of Kortrijk. The Belgian company Flow is developer of traffic management solution to ensure a fluid circulation of traffic using data. The Dutch technology company Nedap is manufacturer of SENSIT. This wireless parking sensors system detects in real-time whether or not a single parking bay is occupied and how long it has been occupied.
