The city of Kortrijk has been awarded the Smart City award from the technology federation Agoria and Belfius Bank. A jury of 7 independent professionals awarded the city for their recently implemented “Shop & Go” project for short stay parking.

The Shop&Go project allows visitors and suppliers to park the first half an hour for free. Thanks to a wireless sensors system that detects the vehicle occupancy of every single parking space, enforcement officers can follow the parking time of each parked car. The parking bays are meant for suppliers delivering packages or visitors who need to run a quick errand – Now they can park free for half an hour and they don’t even need to display a ticket.
The Shop&Go zones are located in the historical centre of Kortrijk. The parking bays are equipped with a wireless parking sensors from Nedap. Nedap Identification Systems is a leading specialist in systems for long-range identification, wireless vehicle detection and vehicle entrance management, and developed the wireless sensor system SENSIT.
The parking bays are monitored by parking attendants to prevent abuse of the short stay spaces. Whenever a sensor detects that a vehicle has been parked for over half an hour, the parking attendant receives a message that informs him of the number of the parking bay with the vehicle in overstay.
