In an attempt to make electric vehicles more attractive to the public, BMW designed streetlights that have outlets to charge electric vehicles. They should be able to connect with different types of EV’s, using different power suppliers. The EV charging streetlights make use of the existing infrastructure. BMW already designed 2 prototypes which will be tested in 2015 in Munich, Germany, where the BMW headquarters are located.
Right now, you have to drive to an EV charging point to charge your car, or you can charge your car when parked in a reserved EV charging spot in a parking garage. If these streetlights are spread throughout cities, people might be able to charge their EV's right in front of their house. But do these EV charging streetlights have future? For example, would cities be willing to replace their existing streetlights with the BMW streetlights?
