Virta Enables Nissan V2G Integration with E.ON

Nissan hopes the trial will evidence the business case for V2G charging for a range of sectors.

Virta has enabled Nissan to kickstart vehicle-to-grid (V2G) electric vehicle charging together with E.ON. Nissan installed 20 electric vehicle (EV) chargers with V2G capabilities at its European Technical Centre in Cranfield as part of a collaborative project with E.ON and Virta.

Virta provided a digital EV charging platform for E.ON that will automate charging and energy export in line with signals such as grid demand, energy prices, and the carbon intensity of the energy mix. Virta is E.ON's e-mobility partner.

The pilot project is a part of Nissan's aim to develop new smart mobility packages for business customers. During the project, vehicles will be connected to the electric chargers at intervals designed to replicate corporate fleet schedules – mainly overnight, but also for chunks of time during the day. Nissan hopes the trial will evidence the business case for V2G charging for a range of sectors.

Electric vehicles are essentially big batteries on wheels. Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) means communication between vehicles and the energy grid. With V2G technology, electricity can be taken from the car battery and pushed back into the grid.

V2G technology enables electric vehicles to be used as part of the energy system, side-by-side with stationary energy storage and renewable energy production. A recent study concluded that connecting EVs to the grid could cut £270m a year off the cost of running the power system in the UK alone by 2030.

No wonder that the V2G market is projected to grow to over $5 billion between 2020-2024. The European standard for V2G charging will be ready in late 2020.

Virta is a global leader of electric vehicle (EV) charging platform technologies and the world’s leading V2G commercial solution developer. Virta has multiple ongoing commercial V2G solution projects for energy and fleet customers.
