Milford Sound Introduces Smart Parking Technology to Ease Parking Frustrations at Tourist Hotspot

The popularity of Milford Sound Information Centre and Café with the hundreds of thousands of tourists who visit the area each year meant increasing pressure on the parking facilities.

Milford Sound is one of New Zealand’s most awe inspiring natural attractions. It is located in Fiordland, a World Heritage Site, and every year draws hundreds of thousands of visitors, making it one of New Zealand’s most visited tourist spots.

There is a 4-hour drive from Queenstown, or a 2-hour drive from Te Anau, and the country is so scenic that many visitors will hire a car and drive themselves so they can take their time, enjoy the scenery, and stop at rest stops for photographs.

Situated right on the waterfront, the Milford Sound Information Centre and Café is always a thriving hub of activity. However, the popularity of the Centre meant increasing pressure on the parking facilities. To reduce congestion, get maximum efficiency from available space, and increase exploration time for visitors Milford Sound Information Centre and Café needed a smart car park system that would guide motorists quickly and accurately to vacant parking bays.

Milford Sound Tourism turned to Smart Parking, who recommended their SmartGuide solution. The recent deployment involved the installation of over 200 of their second generation vehicle detection sensors across all three of the Centre’s car parks. The sensors detect the occupancy status of every parking space and send live data through Smart Parking’s SmartCloud, which in turn feeds this data to the large on-site digital signage. This helps direct drivers to available bays, resulting in improved traffic flow and a better visitor experience.

As well as this information affording drivers a hassle-free parking experience, the data is also fed into SmartRep – Smart Parking’s analytics tool and dashboard – giving Milford Sound Tourism the opportunity to monitor data such as numbers and length of stay, and contributing to decisions around future planning of the area.
