One ticket for parking and travelling by tram

The fact that local public transport and private transport can indeed be interlinked has once again been impressively demonstrated by Scheidt & Bachmann with its "P+Tram" project in Montpellier, France.

Parking spaces are rare in the centre of Montpellier. Therefore an incentive to use the tram system was required. But what do you do with the car if you first have to drive to the tram stop? Car parks are available to passengers at certain tram stations to encourage them to change over to the tram system. However, these car parks are primarily intended for tram passengers and not for "casual parking". Passengers may also have a P-Tram card and should also be given a further price reduction. Scheidt & Bachmann came up with a solution for these different types of parkers, where specific rates can be chosen for parking. Moreover, the parking ticket can be subsequently used to ride on the tram.

Customers can buy a single ticket to pay for both parking and their tram journeys. The ticket can easily be paid for at any of the vending machines – at the rate required by the customer. Not having to buy separate tickets for parking and riding on the tram is a real benefit, as both can be paid together at one machine. This is not only easy, but also saves time.

Statistics on use show that acceptance is high amongst customers and that the Park & Ride system with the tram is very popular. The solution is so ingeniously simple that other cities are already showing a keen interest in this approach. The general trend towards combining parking and local public transport system looks likely to continue.
