Quercus: License Plate Recognition System in the Belval Train Station Parking Facility
Vehicle entries and exits from the train station in the Belval district of Luxembourg are now monitored by Quercus Technologies license plate recognition units. Belval has two train stations operated by Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois (CFL), the state-owned company that manages Luxembourg’s rail system. Rail lines branch out from the capital of the Great Duchy to their destinations around the country. Luxembourg City is also home to the country’s main railway station. CFL’s multi-storey parking garage is located next to the Luxembourg train station, featuring 1,622 parking spaces, 40 spaces for bicycles and 44 for electric cars.
Installation of control systems in parking facilities is an increasingly important decision, especially in an infrastructure such as a train station, with high user traffic, and where time is of the essence. That is why this parking system has become an indispensable automation component to streamline modern-day parking garages and lots.
Vehicles parked in train station parking lots must be monitored and protected at all times. To do so, operators must install license plate recognition cameras that verify which vehicles are parked inside the facility and expedite control over their access. The All-In-One cameras are equipped with technology capable of processing and even reconstructing obstructed portions that can hinder plate recognition. With the captured license plate image, the vehicle’s entry can be read and its exit, confirmed. The data collected in this process are stored in the database, and can later be strategically used by the operator to generate reports that help improve parking facility management, or have a record of all license plate numbers, which can enable the taking of necessary measures in case of any disturbance in the parking area.
Reliability of License Plate Number Identification Systems
Achieving 100% reliability in license plate recognition is not an easy task. The main problem is that there are often elements that complicate flawless vehicle identification. After performing numerous reliability tests to prevent errors and continue improving detection system results, we can state that the SmartLPR Access license plate recognition system has a reliability rate of 99.9% in its double license plate recognition mode (High-Reliability Reading, or HRR). This puts Quercus Technologies on the cutting edge in vehicle detection.
The demand for LPR technology is constantly growing. ANPR systems are a way to overcome the problems common to urban centers, with high vehicle concentration, congestion and access difficulties. By mitigating these issues, safety and mobility can be significantly improved in outdoor as well as indoor parking areas. All in all, it is about improving user experience and contributing to the evolution of today’s parking facilities.
