Municipal Parking Services: City of Hyattsville Introduces Safety Cameras for 15-Minute Parking Zones
Those not-so 15-minute trips to the coffee shop might cost you more now.
The City of Hyattsville has installed parking cameras on 15-minute parking spots to discourage people from staying longer than the expected time. The first installments went in last week in the 4300 block of Gallatin Street right outside the Hyattsville City Building and near popular coffee shop, Vigilante.
The devices in question are called the MPS Safety Stick. The devices are portable and solar-powered. They take a photo when cars first park and another one when they leave the spot.
City Of Hyattsville Operations Manager, Reggie Bagley, said the cameras are to aid local businesses. “We’re never looking to find people or to maximize revenue for the city through our mechanisms,” he said. “What we’re looking to do is to enhance the parking experience of everyone.” One of those people who would benefit from better parking is Michael Richards, the owner of Will’s Decorating, located on Baltimore Avenue.
“I think the people who come to visit obey the parking laws then everyone would be happy,” he said. “The city itself… just moved boulders to get this looking right and to get everyone together.”
The city is hoping to install more cameras in more 15-minute parking zones later this year but will judge the results of its initial rollout.
Violators of the 15 minutes will be issued a warning for the first 30 days of its installation.
