Monit: Tariff Audit for Parking

Tariff audit

Always apply the correct parking tariffs with intelligent tariff audits. Incorrectly set tariffs in parking meters or apps can result in lost parking revenues or unhappy customers. With tariff audit from Monit Data you can check if the correct tariffs are configured and adjust them if needed.

Lower tariffs at the parking meter or in parking apps? As a processor of data from dozens of municipalities, we regularly see that the settings of the tariffs for these two types of payment options differ from each other. And all this while the parking location is in the same tariff area. Parking meters that use an outdated tariff from a few years ago, or parking apps that use tariffs from other parking zones; These are just a few examples of what can happen.

It is of course an unexpected bonus for a customer parking their vehicle if the parking tariff is lower than it should be.. Naturally, it is unlikely that lower tariffs will be reported to the operator of the parking facility. As a municipality, you can lose out on significant parking revenues if the tariffs are set incorrectly, especially if this is for a longer period of time.. On the other hand, you can get bad press and thousands of customers may have to be compensated if it they have been paying too much due to too high tariffs. Not to mention the administrative hassle to correct all this. To avoid these scenarios, a regular audit of the parking tariffs as set in the various systems is recommended.

Discrepancies in tariffs

Common discrepancies in parking tariffs that we see ‘in the field’ arise from incorrect input of the tariff scheme in the parking systems. After all, this is often still human work. What we also encounter is that the term ‘day ticket’ is interpreted in different ways. A day ticket can only be valid until the end of a calendar day, or 24 hours from the moment of payment/registration. In addition, we see that when parking meters are relocated to different zones, sometimes it is forgotten to adjust the tariffs accordingly. Or that during maintenance on a parking meter, the configured tariffs jump to those of one or more years ago (presumably after a reset of the machine, it really happens).

By auditing each individual parking payment, it is possible to quickly gain insight into the amount paid per transaction at each point-of-sale, whether it is a parking meter or app. Put these amounts next to the amount you could expect based on the applicable parking tariffs and you will quickly see if the tariffs are configured correctly in the point-of-sale. With the Parking Monitor from Monit Data, these audits can be done completely automatically. Are there any consistent and noticeable differences in tariffs? Then it might be a wise idea to take a good look at the tariffs set in the parking meters and apps.
