Rights to a Green Future
Go Green
Recently the Airport Carbon Accreditation Organisation stated that 60% of an airport’s carbon footprint is landside. The National Air Traffic Services has forecast that UK air traffic will increase by 45% by 2015 which will undoubtedly have an impact on the environment. Although airports have always had to observe environmental issues such as incorporating glass walls for natural light, using recycled building materials, soundproofing nearby homes and utilising natural gas fuelling stations, these are just procedures that are deemed as customary in recent years.
The pressure for many airports to consider more eco-friendly measures is continuous and such acts of corporate social responsibility have been proven to yield financial as well as competitive advantages. Not only does the compliance of greener methods create a better message to customers, it’s also an opportunity for growth and new business developments for airports.
The car parking facilities driven by AeroParker have certainly considered eco-friendly approaches to their systems. Reducing car park circulation by providing designated spaces for airport passengers decreases the time in which it takes to find free bays and therefore pollution caused by car fumes. The bus service provided at airports means it takes just one journey to take multiple people to their destination, much like the idea of car sharing, this reduces the amount of traffic driven to the same place.
Car washing service has also seen a great new overhaul at a range of parking facilities launched by Hertz this year. The car rental company have generated a water-less, nontoxic and bio degradable substance to clean vehicles in just 8-minutes. By doing so, Hertz have cut costs and are working towards helping the environment and a solution to waste. This new solution is saving 130 million gallons of water annually and customers are seeing a positive change in airport direction.
The rise in fuel costs is a significant reason for airports to adopt energy saving methods and the development of new technology is certainly helping them do so. Social awareness also plays a huge part in driving the need for ‘greener’ airport approaches as it is fast becoming a great demand from customers.
AeroParker are proudly working alongside a number of these including Manchester Airport whose goal is to become one of Europe’s leading airports in managing and caring for the environment.
