The Controversy of "Ladies Only" Parking

Ladies Parking at Frankfurt Airport

Frankfurt Airport has received media attention of late due to their abidance of a German law requiring the provision of female-only parking areas. The reactions have been varied…

The parking spaces are somewhat wider than the average parking space, they are located closer to the airport terminals and the lighting, walkways and general ambience of the area (thanks to bright “pink-ribbon pink” pathways and floral murals) – gives an overall feeling of safety and convenience.

This video posted in 2013 finds the situation laughable, and many women have objected to the fact that the wider spaces suggests that women need more room to park successfully as they are not as good at parking as men.

Men have also objected to this, asking why this area is essential as the whole of the car parking facility should be well lit, accessible and safe for everyone to use.

The recent developments in the parking industry are improving parking for everyone. We are headed away from the old stereotype of a dark, dingy, not-not-well-ventilated crumbling old structure and toward LED lighting, guidance systems, pay-by-phone, driverless cars and holograms in our parking facilities.

Personally, I think any initiative is a good initiative. Proactivity develops our sense of progressiveness on solving those issues that do nothing but hold us back. Let’s keep working together towards a brighter LED-lit future and the possibilities are endless. What’s your view?
