Drivers are frustrated with the parking rates en small parking spaces. That’s the conclusion of the research by the ANWB in cooperation with the Dutch parking association Vexpan.
The results from the survey, held among almost 1400 members of the ANWB, aren’t lying: about 17% of the members are frustrated with the high rates and 45% thinks the parking spaces are too small.
30% finds it difficult to estimate their parking time when buying a ticket. This can be reduced if cities enabled pay-by-phone parking. ANWB members also note in the survey that only one payment method at a parking meter is not enough. Preferably they pay by cash or debit card. A small group of people prefers mobile phone payments or credit card payments.
68% of the respondents want to pay per minute, in contrast to the current paying by the hour, even if this means the rate will go up. They are willing to pay 20% more if pay per minute were to be introduced.
Another result of the survey shows that 78% of the respondents don’t look at the parking rates before parking. However, more than half of the people are willing to walk an extra 15 minutes if that means they can save €5 on parking.
The ANWB calls politics and the parking industry to implement, where possible, a pay per minute policy. The ANWB also wants parking operators to implement multiple payment methods at parking meters. For on-street parking is the possibility for implementing pay-by-phone. With these changes people will no longer have to estimate their parking time in advance and they only have to pay for the excact time that they are parked. Real-time parking information through apps or in-car navigation systems make it possible to choose your parking space: A more expensive spot closer to your destination or a cheaper one that’s further away.
