The city of Amsterdam started a trial in May 2013 in order to facilitate all the permit holders with a place to park. The trial involved making several spots available to permit holders in the municipal parking garage “Markenhoven” in downtown Amsterdam. It turned out to be a success.
Thanks to the SKIDATA licence plate recognition system, entry and exit runs smoothly for permit holders and most of them (75%) immediately drive towards the garage instead of circling around looking for an on-street spot, according to the evaluation research.
The SKIDATA access control system provides the permit holders with fast, easy, reliable and convenient entry and exit. The SKIDATA parking system has an online connection to the SHPC platform that holds all permit registrations. This way the system recognizes who has a permit and who doesn’t.
The underground parking garage “Markenhoven” is the first parking garage in Amsterdam that is open to permit holders. Because of the success of the trial, last Monday the garage “Piet Hein” was also equipped with available spaces for permit holders. Soon other municipal parking garages in the center of the city will also be equipped with this solution. The city plans on creating a total of approximately 5000 additional parking spaces.
