Over the next 10 years, the Madrid-Barajas Airport will invest about 1.571 million euros to update its facilities. The expansion will include increasing passenger capacity to 80 million and making the necessary changes to receive bigger planes such as the A380 and the A340.
The first part of the expansion will be ready in 2021 and will take 530 million euros of the budget. The second part will be over the next four years with the remaining 1.041 million euros and will be completed by 2026.
Part of the challenges of increasing capacity means improving the accessibility of the airport. The amount of passengers that pass through airports each year is set to increase even more than the last decade. This will put the airports' infrastructure to the ultimate test as airports compete to attract airlines, top destinations and the loyalty of travelers.
With an increase of passengers at airports worldwide, taxi pick-up/drop-off areas need to be optimized, on-site and off-site car parks will need expansion and public transport points should be improved. The leading airports, such as the Madrid-Barajas Airport which is ranked as 5th busiest in the EU, are already improving their facilities.
Amsterdam Schiphol is another leading airport that has been expanding their car parks, offering more off-site options and improving their pricing schemes all aimed at improving the passenger experience now, and laying the groundwork for the future.
As the needs of airports change, so will the solutions the parking industry has to offer. From revenue management, pricing schemes, barriers, parking guidance and automated parking solutions, the parking industry is ready for the next 20 years of airport parking.
